Non-executive director, Guardian Media Group
Until the end of 1999 John Bartle was the Joint Chief Executive of Bartle Bogle Hegarty (BBH), the advertising agency he co-founded in 1982.
Began his career in 1965 with Cadbury (later Cadbury Schweppes) and worked there for eight years. Left in 1973 to become a co-founder of the London office of advertising agency TBWA.
Initially Planning Director there, he was Joint Managing Director from 1979 until leaving to start BBH in 1982. He now has a portfolio of business interests. He is a non-executive director of the Guardian Media Group and the non-executive Chairman of three companies: i-Level, a digital media agency; Dare, a digital marketing agency; and, Garner plc, an executive search company.
In addition he acts as an advisor to the Barnardos charity for whom he is a Vice- President. He was President of the advertising industry´s trade body, the IPA (Institute of Practitioners in Advertising) from 1995-97, has been on the Council of the Advertising Association, was a Visiting Professor of Marketing at the University of Strathclyde until the end of 1999 and was President of NABS, the communication industry´s charity, from 2001 to 2004.
He is a Fellow of the IPA (FIPA) and CAM (FCAM) and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Bucks University College in 2006. He was awarded the CBE in the Queen´s Birthday Honours list in 2003.
