Rising star of the year

Innovative rising stars are hard to come by. It takes bottle and brains to push boundaries at an early stage in your career, but some of the best innovations come from taking a fresh approach.

We’ll be looking for the shining lights in the media industry who’ve already shown flashes of brilliance and who will no doubt be pioneers in the years to come.

Michael Smith
Michael Smith is the chief executive of Mind Candy, who create games and puzzles that span multiple media. Smith now heads the company of 18 full-timers with an increasing reputation for excellence. Its second web-based virtual world launches this September, aimed at 7-12 year olds and described as Club Penguin meets Tamagotchi.

Sam Killcoyne
While most of his peers were watching Hollyoaks, Sam Killcoyne was running his own club night (and later festival) for under 18s. While it’s almost impossible to write anything about him without sounding patronising or condescending, Killcoyne has been at the forefront of a movement which has captured the spirit of a new, digital age: combining the “anyone can do it” aesthetic of punk with a media savvy MySpace twist.

Sarah McVittie
Sarah McVittie is the founder and CEO of the Texperts, a UK-based service which lets people text in any question and have it answered within minutes. This year alone she has effectively steered her company through a complete rebrand, tripled the size of the company to 265 people in order to meet the demand and successfully raised £1.5 million of funding to take the company to the next stage.
